An oil stain that stretches over a length of 700-800 and a width of about 30 meters was observed on the Danube, close to the station in the town Varciorova, upstream of the Iron Gates Dam I.
Romanian Waters Mehedinti Director, Adrian Draghici, said the site was sent a team of specialists to sampling in order to perform analysis and, depending on their outcome, will act to remove oil stain.
Mehedinti environmental authorities often face such incidents because of the ships transiting the area. It is a common practice to clean bilges of ships by oil residue, which then illegally discharged into the Danube. Normally, this operation is carried out in ports, in special places, but for the service vessel shall pay a fee.
